Criminology & Police Science: Pioneering Education in Bangladesh
Criminology and Police Science is a unique discipline in Bangladesh and in the sub-continent as well. This is a multidisciplinary field of study with a view to produce knowledge based on criminology, sociology, victimology, criminal justice, criminological research, forensics and criminal investigation, cyber security, policing and human rights to ensure justice. The department has been introduced in Mawlana Bhashani Science and Technology University under the faculty of Life Science on 13th December 2003. The first Vice-Chancellor of this university, late Professor Dr. Yusuf Sharif Ahmed Khan was the founding Chairman of the department. The academic journey of this department started from 1st June 2004.
The department offers four years B.Sc. (Honors) degree and one and half years MS degree in Criminology and Police Science. Recently the department has introduced PhD programme. At present the department has fifteen faculties. Moreover, a number of adjunct faculties has adorned with their expertise from sociology, police, legal professions, forensic medicine, CID, and courts with eight supportive office staffs.
Advanced Resources and Career Paths in Criminology
The department has a well-established seminar library with a good number collection of academic books, journals, government report, research papers from national and international arena. Establishment of a well-structured forensic and investigative laboratory is developing. The students are getting a good access to the laboratory resources under their sessional courses in the present setup. They are engaging in different extracurricular activities such as debate, quiz, cultural activities, and sports etc. It is a matter of pride that the students are continuously carrying out several humanitarian activities and other voluntary services.
Until 2023, 15 batches have completed their B.Sc. (Honors) degree and 13 batches have completed their MS Degree. The total number of current students of this department is about 300. The young graduates have a wide range of job opportunities both in government and non-government organizations in home and abroad. Most of the students have developed their career in relevant government and nongovernment organizations. A good number of them have been working in renowned national and international security agencies, research organizations with highest level of professionalism.


New Programs & Global Partnerships in Criminology
The Department has a plan to introduce some new programmeme in the near future like professional masters in criminology and police science, M.Phil, Post Graduate Diploma (PGD) and other certificate courses so that the students and the professional like police personnel, detectives, lawyers, journalists’ can enhance their expertise and professionalism. The department is highly motivated to establish exchange programme with other universities of the world and enhance internship opportunity with various national and international organizations.
